One of the biggest benefits is understanding when what I had in my mind does not appear on the page. I've also used beta readers, and given them specific questions that made it clear that I wanted critiques and suggestions, as well as positive comments. It's totally possible to give honest, constructive criticism in a manner that is respectful to the writer.
