I was happily surprised. Too often you'll see characters like you described above, loners for the sake of being loners. You're right, it's wish fulfillment. There's nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't feel authentic. Folks need to cut the anti-hero bullshit. People want to belong, even if they say they don't. Humans are social. Even hermits get lonely after a while.
