The aim was to take the first chapter of a well know, successful novel and dissect it. What makes it work, which rules were followed, which were broken to good effect.
Books are chosen from different genres and preferably early or debut novels, as these were the ones that first got the agents/publishers interested. Recent books are preferred (although not always) as the 'rules' are always changing.
